Description:
Calamares is a distribution-independent system installer, with an
advanced partitioning feature for both manual and automated
partitioning operations. Calamares is designed to be customizable by
distribution maintainers without the need for cumbersome patching,
thanks to third-party branding and external modules support.

For Calamares, universal means that Calamares can be configured for
any Linux distribution to act as installer for that distribution's
ISO and memory-stick images. It does not mean that Calamares, as
provided in source, can install any Linux. Users of Calamares are the
people who make the distribution images, not the people who eventually
install those images (although there's a user's guide on the main
Calamares website, too).
